Jennie Benfold Haywood founded Spick and Span in Chester in 1984 and built it on a single, stubborn idea: the work is only ever as good as the person doing it. She runs the business with her husband Ian alongside her, the two of them working hand in hand, as they have for many years.

Four decades have taught Jennie to read the market and settle the business firmly where it belongs: commercial cleaning. For most premises this is not a luxury but a necessity. A primary school that isn’t cleaned after the final bell cannot open the next morning, and the same is true of a medical reception or a working factory floor. When the standard slips, it is your name on the building. When Covid arrived and many would have walked away, Jennie and Ian kept the business standing and kept clients covered.

Most cleaning firms are fine, until the day they aren’t.

The quote comes over email and the price looks good. Then the cleaner changes every few weeks, nobody quite learns your building, and when something goes wrong you are left waiting on a call centre that has never seen the place.

We have always done it the other way. The same person on your site wherever we can manage it, a named manager who knows your building, and someone real to answer the phone. You should not have to think about the cleaning at all. That is the point of paying someone to do it properly.
